It’s a lamentable thing that we can be called the Porn Generation. As the author asks, "this is our legacy to our children?" How terribly ironic it is that within our time we have both empowered women and degraded them to objects of sexual perversion.
And it is a perversion in the original sense of the word, defined as "the alteration of something from its original course, meaning, or state to a distortion or corruption of what was first intended" (Oxford American Dictionary). As C. S. Lewis put it in The Magician’s Nephew (again), "that is what happens to those who pluck and eat fruits at the wrong time and in the wrong way. The fruit is good, but they loathe it ever after." Sexuality, which can be an image of Heaven, becomes "dirty", perverted.
Our ‘legacy’ gets worse, of course. As we discussed last Saturday, there is now even an official political party in Netherlands that promotes pedophilia, bestially, and child pornography. What’s more, the Dutch court is refusing to ban the party – "The judge said it was the voters’ right to judge the appeal of political parties". Disgraceful. This is Political Correctness gone mad. They could learn a thing or two from Thomas Jefferson who remarked, "sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others?".
G. K. Chesterton, that brilliant Catholic author, journalist and apologist said it best: "[the Catholic Church] is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age" (from Why I am Catholic). It is well documented that pornography is the major cause sexual abuse, rape, incest and other manifestations of that sexual perversion. I say manifestations because that’s precisely what they are. The perversion already exists in the mind of those who indulge in such depravities as pornography; physical depravities are then merely expressions of what already exists. This is why in Matthew 5:27-30 Jesus exhorts:
|"You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell."|
As St. Thomas Aquinas taught, lust clouds the mind, just like any other sin. It becomes an addiction which takes away the freedom of our intellect and will; the flesh dominates the mind and soul, hindering our capacity for love, which is the truest freedom. A degrading slavery, indeed – the very stuff Hell is made of.
There is help available, and it is possible to overcome porn’ addiction, but first our generation has to recognize and admit to the problem, and take responsibilities. We must do our very best to fight this battle collectively through repentance, prayer and support to reverse the tarnish left on our ‘legacy’.
